Before Cain ever laid a hand on Abel, he'd already killed something else.
He murdered the warning in his heart.
The idea
God didn't leave Cain in the dark. He showed up before the murder and gave him a straight warning. Sin is crouching at the door. It wants you. You must rule over it.
Cain heard it and buried it anyway.
Here's what got me. Ignore God's voice long enough, and you don't end up with no voice at all. You end up obeying a different one. Anger. Bitterness. Whatever's crouching at your door. Silence never stays empty for long.
After the murder, Cain complained his punishment was too heavy to bear. Not conviction. Self pity. He wasn't sorry he did it. He was sorry he got caught with the weight of it.
Then he walked away from the presence of the Lord and became a fugitive and a wanderer. Staggering. Unstable. Tossed around. No place to call home. That's not just what happened to Cain's body. That's what happens to a man's soul when he keeps shutting out the warnings.
Sin will take you farther than you want to go. It'll leave you longer than you want to stay. It'll cost you more than you want to pay.
A question to sit with
What warning have you been ignoring long enough that it's starting to train you to obey something else instead?
