Pastor Lamar called Sunday's message Area 51.
Top secret. Restricted access. Then he opened to Psalm 51, and I realized the restricted area he meant was mine.
The idea
It was spring, the time when kings go out to battle. David sent his army and stayed home.
That's where it starts. Not on the roof. On the couch. A man who's not where he's supposed to be is already halfway to somewhere he shouldn't go.
Then came the roof. He saw her. He sent for her. He took her. James lays out the same road. Desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and sin, fully grown, brings death.
But here's what got me. The affair wasn't the worst part. The cover up was.
Bathsheba sends word that she's pregnant, and David doesn't repent. He goes into management mode.
Plan one, bring her husband Uriah home from the war so the timeline works. Uriah won't do it. His brothers are sleeping in a field, so he sleeps at the king's door.
Plan two, get him drunk. Still won't go home.
Sit with that. Uriah drunk had more integrity than David sober.
Plan three, send him back to the front carrying his own death order.
Pastor put the lie on the screen. We tell ourselves the cover up is more convenient than fessing up.
It never is. Every cover up needs another one behind it. David went from a look to a funeral, and the whole time he thought he was handling it.
I've done this. Not murder. But I've managed a story instead of telling the truth. I've spent more energy protecting my image than fixing what was broken. Have you done anything similar?
Then God sent Nathan. He told David about a rich man who stole a poor man's only lamb. David was furious at the guy. Nathan looked at him and said, "You are that man."
We're always sharpest about the sin that belongs to somebody else.
Here's the grace in it. God didn't send Nathan to bury David. He sent him to bring David back. Psalm 51 is what came out of that conversation. A king with nothing left to hide, asking for mercy.
One line from Sunday I wrote down. The secrets you conceal are the things you need to reveal so that you can heal.
A question to sit with
What are you managing right now that you should be confessing?
Sit with that one before you talk yourself out of it.
Every man needs a Nathan, and that's what we're building inside Brotherhood Forged, guys who love you enough to say the hard thing to your face.
Every brotherhood starts with one guy forwarding this to another guy. Be that guy.
Last thing, and no secrets here. This newsletter costs real time and real money to put out every week. If it's been worth something to you and you've got a little room, a gift helps it reach the next guy. If not, I'm just glad you read this far.
